At the request of the Independence Seaport Museum located in Philadelphia, PA, MidAtlantic performed a visual underwater inspection of the Cruiser Olympia. The purpose of the visual inspection of the hull was to locate and identify any damage or defects that may threaten the cruiser. Additionally, MidAtlantic located the stern blanking plugs, perform an underwater visual inspection and took ultrasonic thickness reading to determine the remaining steel thickness of the vessel. MidAtlantic is proud to be involved in the preservation of an important part of American maritime history!
The Cruiser Olympia was built in 1895 as a state-of-the-art man of war and served 27-years in the United States Navy, including active duty in the Spanish-American War, an impressive stint as Admiral Dewey’s flagship during the battle of Manila Bay, and it’s final act of services – transporting the American Unknown Soldier of World War I from France to the United State in 1921.
